Zamboanga's Culture and its people

One of the unique qualities of Zamboanga is that it has colorful cultures, traditions, and lifestyles of people shaped by the confluence of native Subano, Malay, Islamic (Yakan, Samal, Tausug and Badjao), Spanish and American cultures that spanned the course of centuries. Of all these, the Spanish culture had the strongest impact.

The character of the Zamboangueno people as we can say for their kinship family system, love for one's cultural heritage, propensity for extravagance, fiestas and siestas, and aristocratic behaviour. While their social lives usually resolve around religious practices, the tradition of the bantayanon, fiestas, fondas, includes their bailes the vals, regodon and paso doble.

Well, this is just a short overview of the cultures of Zamboanga, there are still more. Just keep on following my blog. :)

Brief History
Zamboanga City was founded in the late 12th or early 13th century as a settlement by the Subanen People. Zamboanga peninsula was also the homelands of the ancestors of the Yakan, the Balanguingui and other closely related Sama-badjao people
The name for the city (and later the peninsula), "Zamboanga", is the HIspanized spelling of the  Sinama term for "mooring place" - samboangan (also spelled sambuangan; and in Subanen, sembwangan), from the root word samboang ("mooring pole"). The name "Samboangan" is well-attested in Spanish, British, French,German, and American historical records from as far back as the 17th century.
